What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal permanently reduces unwanted hair using laser light. The laser targets the melanin pigment inside the hair; that pigment absorbs the light, converts it to heat, and the heat disables the structure at the root.

The accurate term is “permanent hair reduction”. The treatment reduces hair growth substantially and lastingly, but a promise that “not a single hair will remain” is not a medically accurate claim.

Why Are Several Sessions Needed?

This is the most commonly misunderstood part. Hairs are not all in the same phase at the same time; each hair is in growth (anagen), regression or resting phase.

The laser only affects hairs in the growth phase, because only then is the connection between root and hair established. Each session targets the hairs that happen to be in that phase, and the rest wait for the next one. That is why sessions are spaced at set intervals — doing them more often does not speed up the result.

What Affects the Result

  • Hair colour: Dark hair carries more melanin and responds better. White, grey and very light blond hair lacks the pigment the laser needs to find.
  • Skin tone: The greater the contrast between skin and hair, the more straightforward the treatment. On darker skin, device and energy selection needs more care.
  • Area: The hair cycle differs by area; the face usually behaves differently from the legs.
  • Hormonal factors: Conditions such as thyroid disorders and PCOS can keep driving hair growth. That does not mean the treatment fails, but maintenance sessions may be needed.

Who Is It Not Suitable For?

Treatment is postponed during pregnancy, with an active infection or open wound in the area, on recently tanned skin, and while taking certain light-sensitising medications. On white and very light hair laser hair removal will not give the expected result; laser hair lightening may be considered instead.

Before and After

The area should be shaved with a razor before the session. Waxing, tweezing and epilator devices must be avoided, because they remove the hair from the root and leave nothing for the laser to target. Mild redness and a feeling of warmth lasting a few hours can follow.

Afterwards, protecting the area from the sun and avoiding hot showers, saunas and pools for a few days are the general recommendations. Personalised instructions are given at your appointment.
